Running heads are now only required for professional papers. Student work should not include a running head. However, if you are required to include a running head, we offer a pre-formatted APA template paper in both Word and Pages which you can download at our comprehensive APA Style Guide. All you need to do is click on the header on the first page and add your title, in all caps. Keep the words Running head: at the top. Then click on the header on the second page and do the same, without the words Running head.

If you don't want to use the template, you can start from scratch. Formatting the header in Word for APA running head is a bit complicated - you need to double-click on the header in your Word document, and then click on "Different First Page." That will allow all pages other than the first page to have a different header.
